The surface of a 3D scanned objects is torn into pieces and reassembled into an image file which is used as the virtual object's texture. The software does this reassembly of what can be thousands of small image fragments itself, attempting to be efficient in packing each piece into the specified image size. The better it does, the higher the resolution of the texture.
What if instead of machine organization, these fragmentary texture maps were organized by people -- like me? The result would be an intersection of algorithmic, organic, and human formalism.
